Symptoms of Drug Withdrawal
Have you enrolled yourself in a private drug rehab facility? If yes, congratulations! You have taken your first step to a new life. However, you have to know that the rehab world is an entirely different one than the one when you were still in your addiction days. And part of the new but not-so-pleasant challenges that you have to face while you are undertaking a rehab program is resisting the symptoms of substance withdrawal.
Withdrawal symptoms can vary in time and intensity; generally, heavy users experience longer and more intense symptoms than light users. As a rule of the thumb, withdrawal symptoms start 6 to 12 hours after taking the the last dose, reaches its climax within 1 to 3 days, then subsides in 5 to 7 days.
Here are some of the things that you will probably feel when experiencing withdrawal:
1. Craving For More Drugs
Trying to compensate with the loss of the effects of the substance, the brain desperately tells your body that it needs more of the drug to return to its normal functions. You will experience intense cravings as part of the body's false need to re-experience the bliss of a high.
2. Mood Changes
You may experience feelings of anxiousness, depression, or irritation. Technically known as a dysphoric mood, this is a normal part of drug withdrawal. The desire for euphoria brought about by drugs causes your mood swings. Don't worry, they will usually pass later into the withdrawal stage.
3. Aches And Pains
You may experience headaches and general body pain. The feeling of body pain is known as a rebound effect, and it works like this: drugs block the sub-system that allows you to feel pain. When you cease using drugs, this pathway is opened once again. Therefore, you feel more sensitive to pain for a short time.
4. Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, And Fever
You might experience these unpleasant effects during withdrawal. These physical conditions are normal. These are signs that your body is adjusting to its normal state.
5. Sleep Problems
Drug withdrawal often causes insomnia, a condition wherein you have problems sleeping or staying asleep. This makes you suffer during the first few days of withdrawal but will gradually disappear.
