The Food Of The Gods Spreads To The People

One of the most common gifts given today is chocolate. The gift of dark chocolate shows the recipient that you think they are a person who should luxuriate in the experience of exhilaration that enjoying chocolate provides. The unmatchable feeling of enjoying this delicious treat makes it easy to comprehend why the

Mayans referred to chocolate as the "food of the gods."
Chocolate first was formed in the area that is now Guatemala, Belize, and southern Mexico. Both the Mayan and Aztec peoples made spicy, heavenly drinks using cocoa beans. These drinks were reserved just for the highest of classes which included emperors, clergymen, merchants, and infantrymen, and were consumed at sacramental ceremonies. The beans used to concoct these sacred drinks were even used as currency in Aztec societies.

The explorer Hernando Cortes is credited with economizing the chocolate industry in Spain. Cortes was served "chocolatl" by the Aztecs, and straight away became drawn by its taste. After messing with sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla to sweeten the bitter flavor of the beverage, he concluded that he could produce a commodity which would be highly desired by his fellow Spaniards. To say

Cortes was right would be a vast understatement. Shortly enough Spain had to expand their crops and planted cocoa trees in Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica to keep abreast of the serious demand for chocolate production.

As more machinery was created to help refine the cocoa beans, so did the dissemination of chocolate consumption. This growth is what helped produce all of the different varieties of chocolate found today such as milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, and chocolate infused with mint, fruit, or other tastes. There is no culture on earth that does not love the flavor of chocolate candy. You can not go wrong when giving the gift of chocolate!

Everyone should feel like a god or a goddess. Next time you give your loved one a delicious piece of chocolate or a decadent chocolate gift basket, share with them the history of the world-wide phenomenon that is chocolate. To the Mayans, chocolate could have been the food of the gods. Whether or not this is right or not, chocolate is the food of the planet.
